Book one: The Fellowship of the Ring
In The Fellowship of the Ring we get to meet Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and the many other characters, which will influence the remaining of the series. The first book is about the adventure ahead and the journey to destroy the ring. A lot of things happen and you go through a great deal of the universe.
The Fellowship of the Ring is an amazing book, which will allure you into the amazing universe of Tolkien.
Book two: The Two Towers
In The Two Towers the story is a little different, since the fellowship of the ring has been scattered to the four winds, and now each of them are on their way to help Frodo destroy the ring and stop Sauron and his army from taking over Middle-Earth. Frodo and Sam are all alone, and now they meet Gollum who was the previous owner of the ring, and is desperate to get it back.
Merry and Pippin has been taking as prisoners, and Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas are trying to hunt the Uruk-hai who are keeping them trapped. On their way they get a big surprise and their mission changes as they head towards Helm’s Deep.
Book three: The Return of the King
In the third, and last book, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the grand and final battle has to be fought, and the rings as well as Frodo’s destiny has to be resolved. The first dangerous fights happened in The Two Towers, but now there is an even more difficult and crucial battle ahead for the fellowship of the ring, and especially Frodo.
Frodo and Sam are getting closer to Mordor and the mountain where they can destroy the ring, but there are a lot of obstacles on the way. Aragon and the others have to defend the City of the Kings Minas Tirith in the final battle.
The predecessor to The Lord of the Rings is The Hobbit, and it tells the story about the ring, and how it gets in the hands of Bilbo Baggins. It is recommended that you read it before you read the books of The Lord of the Rings, since you get a general understanding of the universe, the community of the elves, dwarfs, and last but not least, Gandalf.
You can also listen to The Hobbit for free as an audiobook at Audiobooks.
